Why You “Must” Renew Your Mind

The importance of the mind is found throughout Scripture.  The Bible gives specific and repeated instructions about your mind.  Because of its vital importance,  you must guard your mind as the spring from which everything else flows.  In this regard, you “must” be constantly renewing your mind and seeking God’s wisdom and guidance.

Why is it a must?

Renewing the mind is God’s plan for your transformation.  God has chosen to work through your mind to bring positive change to your life.  Paul emphasized the importance of the renewal of the mind.  In the strongest terms possible, he pleaded with the church at Rome to present their bodies as living sacrifices and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:1-2).  This is God’s plan for your sanctification.  It’s best to get on board with God’s plan.  Paul’s letters to the churches always begin with belief and move quickly to behavior.  Your belief will determine your behavior.  For this reason, renewing your mind is a must.

Your mind is a fertile field.  In agriculture and in life you reap what you sow.  If you sow “godliness” and “purity,”  you will gather a harvest of abundance and blessing.  If you plant other things in your mind, you will harvest those as well.  It depends on the seed that you sow.

You will become what you think.  “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7, NKJV).  You really are what you think.  Another way to put it is that “as you think, you will become.”  Therefore, think on things that are lovely and true (Philippians 4:8).  The more you think of these things, the more you will become like them.  Attitudes are vital.  Teach your children to think good thoughts in the morning. Help them early in life to learn the value of good thoughts and good attitudes.

Your “heart” or mind is the well spring of life (Proverbs 4:23).  Everything proceeds from it.  In the Old Testament, the heart could mean the emotions, the will, or the mind.  It’s clear in this instance that the writer of the Proverbs is referring to the mind.  Be careful what you put in your mind.  Like computers, it’s garbage in, garbage out.

What are you doing to renew your mind?  Please leave a comment.  Your positive comments will encourage others to renew their minds.

  1. When I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is thank God for another day and for all the blessings He has given me. I read from my Bible while I drink my coffee in the morning and ask God to bring someone to mind that I can bless in some way that day. This has helped give me get off on a positive note for the day – one day at a time!

  2. Bro. Waylon, I am absolutely convinced that renewing of our minds is the very best ministry we can do for those we rub shoulders with in our personal sphere of influence. Proverbs 5: 14 talks about the consequences of not excersizing wisdom. The writer says: “I was on the verge of total ruin, (and look where he was) In the midst of the assembly and congregation.” Wisdom comes from renewing our minds daily. Thanks for your encouragement day by day.

    1. Thanks for your contribution. I decided to write about this when a man in our church told me about how he was overcoming his difficulty by daily renewing his mind. I was pleased and surprised to see his depth of understanding of how transformation occurs. I agree that the best thing we can do for others is daily submission to God.
