Think As God Thinks

Transformation comes by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:1-2). God wants us to think as He thinks. He wants to renew our minds. Look at this idea: http://waylonbailey.com/2011/07/why-you-must-renew-your-mind/

How do we renew our minds?

First, think with the end in mind. This is the popular suggestion of Stephen Covey in Seven Habits of Highly Successful People. Thinking with the end in mind demands that we think long-term and about real priorities. For years, I have suggested to parents that they parent with the goal in mind of walking your daughter down the aisle (I have two daughters). This forces you to think longer term than the end of the eighth grade. It makes you ask: “What do I want for this daughter?”

Recently, I have seriously considered the time that I (like all of you) will stand before Jesus in judgment. This is the ulitimate long-term thinking. I am convinced that Jesus will want to know what I did with His church. Thinking in this way means that I quit worrying about what someone thinks and begin to consider what Jesus will think. It has made me much more a man of prayer.

Second, think about holiness and righteousness. If you become as you think, then my thinking needs to change–radically. I need to focus on living a holy and righteous life. Only as I live in holiness and righteousness will I be like Jesus.

As you think on those things that are holy and righteous (consider Philippians 4:8-9), quit obsessing over those things that push your button. Don’t think about who has offended you (Proverbs 19:11 should be posted in every church. “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is his glory to overlook an offense”).

Third, think about blessings. Gratitude will flow from a heart set on the kindness of others and the blessings of God.

Finally, pray Scripture. Praying Scripture means that you will pray in the will of God. I suggest Philippians 2:5: “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus” who humbled himself and became obedient.

My Scripture prayer at this time is Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Praying that verse makes me conscious of what God wants me to be, and through prayer I receive the power of God to do what I cannot do.

What do you do to renew your mind? What Scripture are you praying at this time? Please leave a comment below.
