Will Your Money Be A Blessing or A Curse?

A blessing or a curse? That’s the question about money. It can be either one, but you get to determine which one it will be.

We’ve all read the stories (or you probably know someone personally) about those folks who were “blessed”with huge sums of money but later came to understand that the money was a curse. Lottery winners, trust fund babies, even hard-working people who earned every penny that they made are all in danger of experiencing more of the curse than the blessing. I have even known churches who said that the large sum of money that they received was not a good event.

You don’t have to have a lot of money to experience the danger of money. It really can be a “root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Here is another place that will help you deal with your money. http://waylonbailey.com/2011/09/seven-practices-to-get-your-finances-under-control/.

What can you do to make your money a blessing? The entire Bible–and particularly Jesus–gives us a theology of money that will help us turn our money into the kind of blessing that God intended from the beginning.

Remember, how you think about some thing will determine how you behave toward it. We desperately need to take on the mind of Christ about all things, especially money. These posts will help you take on the mind of Christ. http://waylonbailey.com/2011/07/why-you-must-renew-your-mind/. http://waylonbailey.com/2011/07/why-you-must-renew-your-mind-part-two/. http://waylonbailey.com/2011/07/why-you-must-renew-your-mind-part-three/.

Here are several biblical teachings which will change the way you view money. Making money a blessing is a spiritual issue.

First, God is the Creator and Owner of everything. The Rich Fool learned too late that the things that he owned were demanding his life! (Luke 12:13-21). When we learn and accept that all that we have properly belongs to God we can begin to let His bounty become the blessing to ourselves and others that He wants it to be. The goal is to be rich toward God (Luke 12:21).

Second, all of my good gifts come from God (James 1;17). Refusing to accept that God has allowed us to have money and material possessions is like killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Third, money and things are transitory. Heaven and earth will pass away. You didn’t bring anything into the world, and you won’t take anything out (1 Timothy 6:7). Only people and God’s Word are eternal. Emphasize the things that will last. Learning this important lesson will help you make your money a blessing.

Fourth, money is given (even the ability to earn it) as an opportunity to help others (Ephesians 4:28). This is one of the many reasons why you should have a job. 1 Thessalonians 4:11 and Colossians 3:23 give other reasons.

Fifth, don’t work for money; work for God.  Whatever we do should be done for God, and we should do it with all our heart. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving”(Colossians 3:23-24).

Sixth, lay up as much treasure in heaven as possible. Remember this important truth: where your treasure is, your heart will be as well. I want my heart to be in heaven in when I die. For that to take place, I must begin putting treasure in heaven.

Getting the right attitude concerning money is very difficult, but it is worth the effort. May God help you to make your money a blessing to you, to others, and for the kingdom of God. What ways are you seeking to make your money a blessing? Leave a comment below.
