What Steve Jobs Brought To The Table

I am typing this from my iPad with my iPhone close at hand. Though I don’t use it as much, I even have an iPod Shuffle as well. It’s hard not to see the tremendous contribution that Steve Jobs made to the world. He’s being compared to Thomas Edison and even Leonardo da Vinci.

I don’t know how history will see Steve Jobs, but it will certainly see him as an achiever. Apple owes its existence and survival to Steve Jobs. Along with Steve Wozniak, he gave us Apple computers and the Macintosh. All of these devices have a near cult following.

No one would have expected Steve Jobs to achieve what he did. Here’s what we know about his early life. He was born to an American unwed mother who gave him up for adoption. His father was Syrian. Steve Jobs dropped out of college and with Steve Wozniak, began Apple Computer in a garage.

Somehow, none of this looks like the kind of resume or business plan that you would write for success. Today, Apple competes with Exxon Mobil as the largest (by market capitilization) publicly traded company in the world.

We should be reminded that success doesn’t have much to do with our background but everything to do with our work ethic, tenacity, and drive.

As followers of Christ, we should remember that God chooses to use the “foolish” of the world to confound the “wise,” and that God is concerned more about our faithfulness and commitment than our ability.

It’s hard to find a person in the Scripture that God used who grew up in easy circumstances or with an impeccable resume. Jesus said of John the Baptist: If you are looking for fine clothes or rich diets, you should look in king’s palaces. If you are looking for the kind of man that God can use, you look at John. Aaron was a great speaker, but he was not a man of great character. His brother Moses couldn’t speak well, but God used Him to change the world.

Where do you fit in this? Are you faithful, committed, dedicated to God and His purpose for your life? Are you willing to take on tough jobs and give your best for God?

  1. Pastor Bailey,
I feel the some way you do about Steve Jobs great accomplishments, yet I felt sadness when I read that he was Buddist. I pray that at least sometime in his exciting life that he knew the love of Christ and was once saved. It saddens me to think of the alternative. Thank you for insight and wisdom. I really enjoy your blog.

  2. I think that there are many things sad about his life. His biography will be an interesting read. Living “in Christ” as Paul says brings a joy, peace, and love that is beyond comprehension (until you experience it).
