My Favorite Christmas Story

Sometimes the best sermons are not preached from a pulpit. My favorite Christmas story is really a story worth telling. My wife overheard this story a number of years ago in a retail outlet.

Martha was doing Christmas shopping when the woman in line in front of her made these comments to the store clerk. It was at the time when Louisiana and the oil producing states suffered under the “oil bust.” It was advantageous for those folks buying gas but a devastating time for states which produce energy. I well remember that Covington and St. Tammany Parish Louisiana had whole strip shopping centers that sat vacant. Some home owners simply locked the door and left their homes to foreclosure. It was a heart-breaking time for many people.

The woman in line lamented how money was tight for them. She had prepared her children in advance that they would not be able to have a “big” Christmas.

Her boys asked two questions: “Does that mean thay you won’t bake anything this year?” She replied: “Of course, I’ll bake whatever you want for Christmas. That won’t change.”

They then asked the second question: “Does that mean that we won’t be able to have friends over to sing Christmas carols?” Her reply was predictable. “Sure we’ll have friends over to sing Christmas carols.”

She wasn’t quite ready for their next question: “Then what else do we need for Christmas?”

Christmas is all about Christ. When we worship the new born king, we have all we need for Christmas.

My wish for you is for a Christmas where Christ is the Lord of your life and the center of your celebration. May we all sing with the angels: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!”
