Why Traditional Marriage Matters

President Obama’s declaration in favor of same sex marriage last week has huge implications. Some of these implications have to do with politics and the future of the country legally and politically. The greatest implications have to do with the moral future of our society. Anything a president of the United States says or believes is vitally important for the future of the republic. When a president says something so radical, it is even more important.

Why does traditional marriage matter? Why is it important for government to encourage the lifelong, faithful marriage of one man and one woman?

First, this is the standard for stable, character building relationships in all societies. Any government established to “promote the general welfare” must encourage traditional marriage and must discourage any other relationships, including co-habitation.

Second, traditional marriage is best for children. Child Trends sums it up:

An extensive body of research tells us that children do best when they grow up with both biological parents in a low-conflict marriage. . Thus, it’s not simply the presence of two parents, as some have assumed, but the presence of two biological parents that seem to support child development.

One of the interesting aspects of this large body of study is that this is not simply two parents but two biological parents. The studies further support multiple benefits for children who live with their own married parents. In this family structure children live longer, healthier lives, do better in school, and are less violent or sexually active. In addition, children in this kind of family structure are less likely to live in poverty, do drugs, or be in trouble with the law.

Third, traditional marriage supports a stable society.

Fourth, traditional marriage does not open the door to even more tragic forms of relationships. When we open the door to same sex marriages how do we not do so with polygamous relationships, adult-child relattionships? You may scoff at this possibility but would the “greatest generation” Americans have thought in WWII that we would ever have a president supporting same-sex marriage? To open the door to same-sex marriage, opens the door to other types of relationships as well. I think the American people understand this. That is why voters in thirty-two states have voted to affirm traditional marriage. When it comes to a vote of the people, traditional marriage wins.

Oh, yes, there’s a final reason. Faithful, loving, lifelong relationships between one husband and one wife please God. If we want God to bless America, we must encourage traditional marriage. I do not want the nation I love turned over to a reprobate mind.

I pray it is not too late.

  1. Waylon, thanks for taking a bold, clear stand on this pivotal issue. I appreciate it so much. You serve Louisiana Baptists well as our President. Blessings!

  2. Hmmmm… Great minds? Being likeminded with Him is Great and soooooo frustrating. Ever wonder how Jesus or Jeremiah felt when looking upon Jerusalem, knowing what the people were missing/needing? We share; and it doesn’t feel good does it, but necessary. Buck up! We have tools they did not have. Change for Christ depends on us to act like His in and out of office in both the large and the small. “Even a child is know by his doings” crosses plenty of turf. The Child is not created to be alone but to be One with the Body. We can’t gather them all under our wing (His Wing is still extended) but We can reach and teach by Our Actions which speak louder than all Our Words. Romans 12.

Thank you Dr. Bailey for the message, people and programs of First Baptist that reach and Teach. The best hope for cultural walls to melt is behind the Wall of His Love in Him: where all fear is gone & knowing He holds the future making life worth the living. The level plain (meet on the level), the lesson of Charity, nutrition for the Branches from the Vine is Change that matters! AMEN

  3. Waylon, I was so encouraged by your blog today! You are truly our spiritual leader in these times of moral decay. I “googled” the word “reprobate”, and “reprobate mind”(the words you wrote in your last sentence) appeared on a sight. Some of the meanings followed: a mind destitute of judgment, unprincipled mind, a vain empty mind, a mind devoid of all truth. These are just some some definitions, but the Word of God appeared, also, which Paul writes in Romans 1:28,32-“Since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not be done.” “Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things, but also approve of those who practice them.” May we all vehemently look to the Word for a reference point to end the cultural decay of our nation! I pray we all can think and speak the truth of God, and not follow and not conform to the beliefs of ungodly positions in our society! Thank you for your words of Wisdom that always direct us to the truth in the Words of the Lord.

  4. Thank you for responding to this unfortunate position that the president took. I think he was very unwise to speak out, particularly since it appears to me to have been for political gain and a campaign money generator. Opened his mouth and inserted foot.

I agree that children are best served in all areas of their development when they live with both biological parents who love and guide them. It was my observation in my first career as a high school teacher. I never did have an adopted child in my classes who did not have emotional problems. When all was said and done, the parents who wanted a child so badly that they adopted them lost out when the child pondered the fact and reasons that the biological parents gave them away. The positive and the negative added together to be a negative in their own self esteem. Thank God for people who will be adoptive parents. Royce delivered many babies in the four homes for unwed mothers in NO while a resident. SBH. None of the homes are in existance now for that purpose. There are few children to adopt anymore and that brings up other issues in our society that displeases our Heavenly Father. We pray for this nation every day.

  5. Thank you for speaking openly on this. God makes it very plain about this issue. There shouldn’t even be a discussion or debate on whether or not we should allow same-sex marriages. Another good reason for Christians to make sure this president will NOT be re-elected.

  6. It is such a breath of fresh air when clergy in these United States demonstrate such courage and boldness regarding your statement, “If we want God to bless America, we must encourage traditional marriage. I do not want the nation I love turned over to a reprobate mind.” My wife and I are, and have been of the opinion that not until clergy shepherds their flocks from the pulpit in social issues, complacency and apathy will continue to have a devastating effect on America as we know it. Some will argue that publicly challenging the concept of separation of church and state directly from the pulpit could result in jeopardizing the tax exempt status of churches. Waylon, the passion and intensity you demonstated against the legalization of gaming in St. Tammany Parish was certainly reflective in what you then proclaimed, ” This is the good fight.” Our present circumstances could be characterized as our “Greatest Battle”. Should this current President continue to lead this country in godless ways……what value would a tax exempt status be?

  7. Bravo, Waylon! Clear, precise and unwavering yet loving; that is exactly the kind of leaders that we need in our communities! Love you, brother.

  8. So true! For 10 years I worked with a host of adolescent, male, sex offenders in Covington. Besides their sexual offenses against others these lads all had one thing in common. They did not grow up in a household with two biological parents. Many of them never met their fathers or even knew their names. Almost all had angry feelings toward their fathers, and often towards their mothers as well. Some of their offenses were on younger half-siblings as a way to get back at their mothers.
