Many people will use today to make confession of sin and repentance toward God, and that’s a good thing.

Confession, repentance, and renewed devotion please God. Ash Wednesday can be a wonderful time to renew our commitment. It can get us ready to think even more about the cross and the power of Christ’s resurrection.

If  this day or this season is the only time we think of these things, it can be a bad thing.

God doesn’t esteem one day better than another. Every day is His day. The Sunday celebration of the resurrection is a good thing, but God is just as concerned with my behavior and devotion on Saturdays and Mondays as He is on Sunday.

I have two wonderful daughters. They love me and I love them. What if I treat them well on Sunday morning when I preach but with disregard on Sunday afternoon? What if I live a “holy” life on Sunday but a rebellious life during the week? If I do, I will lose their respect and I will lose the respect of my congregation.

Since every day is God’s day, He wants us to live for Him every day.

Even in the Old Testament, God made what He wanted clear. He called on the people of Israel to keep the Sabbath AND to live lives of holiness and devotion.

What is it that pleases God? He wants us to love mercy, do justice, and to walk humbly with Him (Micah 6:8).

Does fasting matter? Yes it does, but the fast God really likes is the one that cares for the needs of people and makes us more Godly people. Isaiah the prophet said that too many fasts only serve to make us grouchy and hard to live with. That is surely not the fast that God desires. “Isn’t the fast I choose: To break the chains of wickedness, to untie the ropes of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and to tear off every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your house, to clothe the naked when you see him, and not to ignore your own flesh and blood?” (Isaiah 58:6-7).

Let us make this day and every day a day to abandon ourselves to God and care for the people He loves.
