When Life Gets You Down

Let’s face it. Life is going to get you down from time to time.

What should you do when you face life’s challenges?

First, accept the fact that life is hard. In the military, it’s called knowing your enemy. Simply knowing that life is difficult helps us accept and deal with the problem.

It also helps knowing that other people face the same kind of struggles you face.

When we moved Martha’s sister to Covington, we began to think about all the people who are faithfully caring for someone else. All of those people have encouraged us by their faithfulness. It helps knowing you are not alone, and that others have received the grace needed to do their best.

Second, find someone else to pick up. I know it sounds better to your ear to find someone to pick you up, but the real answer is finding someone else to pick up. When we bless others, we also receive a blessing. It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Third, emphasize Scripture. Rely on the promises of God. Let God’s Word comfort your heart as you read and meditate on Scripture. I find that I memorize more Scripture in the hard times of life. Use the your tough times to know and experience God’s message.

Finally, seek the help of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised His disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit. After His departure, He knew the disciples would need help. He promised them a comforter (an advocate) who would come alongside them for all of life. “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:26-27).

I find great help in knowing I have God right alongside me in the person of the Holy Spirit. He is the reason we do not fear. As we go through life, we can depend on Him to be with us even when life gets us down.

  1. I’m so glad that you continued your devotion each morning during your time away. I needed to hear this today and I’m so thankful for people like you, your wife, and my pastor who are not afraid to proclaim God’s word. May God truly bless you ….He’s just good all the time!

  2. A great message and one we all needed to hear. A pastor friend of mine gave us a new twist on this passage. He was a giver but had a hard time receiving. One time when one of the members gave him a gift, the pastor said he couldn’t accept it. The member quoted the verse and said: “When you refuse my gift, you rob me of my blessing.” The pastor said he smiled and said thank you. He said it was hard to learn to be on the receiving end of gifts but was working on it.
