Last week Christianity Today magazine published a list of the favorite verses of people around the world.
You might be surprised at this list (for example, John 3:16 didn’t make the cut) or you might not.
It’s certainly not a scientific survey, but it does represent the thoughts of many believers. These top ten verses were the most bookmarked, highlighted, and shared with YouVersion’s Bible App for 2014.
Here are the results of the list.
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Three verses from the fourth chapter of Paul’s letter to the Philippians makes the list. This chapter is a favorite of both Martha and me. The three verses are numbers 2, 3, and 6 on the list.
Philippians 4:6-8 “6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”
Jeremiah 29:11 ” ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ ”
Matthew 6:33-34 were numbers 5 and 9 “33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 were numbers 7 and 10. “5 Trust in the Lord with all you heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
How many of these verses do you know? I suggest you look at all of these and meditate on what they mean to you. Also, this might be a good time to memorize verses in the new year. Memorizing one of these each month will be a good spiritual discipline for the new year.
