It’s Time to Pray for the Oregon Bakers

Last week I saw an interview with Aaron and Melissa Klein, the Oregon couple who own Sweetcakes by Melissa bakery. While I had heard and read of the case, this was the first time I had seen and heard this couple.

They are very young and very committed to God. They have five children. I have no question about their faith and their desire to live their lives and run their business for God.

I listened intently as they told of how they began their business. They invited their pastor and other believers to pray with them as they opened for the first day of business. They described how they prayed and followed Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” They demonstrated their desire to run their business for God and His glory.

I was very impressed with their genuine commitment and amazed at their resolve. I watched Melissa as she described how she had told the couple that she couldn’t participate in their same-sex wedding by baking the cake. She portrayed a kind and caring conversation. (She has not refused to bake for the couple or to serve them in other ways.)

Maybe I’m naive, but I had a hard time imagining  the animosity of the couple. Shouldn’t these two women have a concern for how Melissa Klein feels or her deep convictions? Shouldn’t we be a people who exalt our kindness instead of our rights?

The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries has fined the couple $135,000 and given them a deadline of Monday, July 13, (today) to either pay the fine, begin payment, or ask for a stay until a court deals with their appeal.

Aaron Klein does not intend to give in. “I will not relent. I will continue. I will use every legal remedy I have to make sure that this man (Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian) cannot do this to me, cannot do it to my wife, cannot do it to my five children, cannot do it to any other American.” Avakian has threatened to garnish his wages or place a lien on the Klein’s house. The Labor Commissioner has even forbidden the Kleins to speak about the issue.

It’s time to pray for the Kleins, the Oregon Bureau of Labor,  and for our nation.

  1. Believer’s in Jesus Christ have rights too! My prayer was for the Labor Commissioner that he may know and understand the truth. My prayer is for the Klein’s that they may given strength. My prayer is for God’s Glory and Truth to radiate in the hearts and minds of all involved and concerned in this time and life’s trial.

  2. I have been following this story. I just am disappointed. Christian rights need to be protected too. I will also pray for our country in respect to freedom of religion and freedom of speech. I will continue to pray for the righteous.

  3. This is the under current of evil rearing its’ ugliness in preparation to hurt many. I’m not referring to people. People are being deceived and used. That’s what we are to watch for …
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
John 10:10a The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
    BUT GOD …
John 10:10b-11 I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Choice has always been an option; God gave it to us. This is a movement deceiving many in its’ path of destruction. It is sad.

May God bless and keep the Klein Family. May the eyes of the deceived be opened to Truth. May the church speak and stand for the Truth in Love.

    Prayer is on-going.

  4. God grant that the Baker family might have a way out of the quagmire into which the law has brought them out of a concern, supposedly, for equal rights for LGBT people. The truth is that we are dealing with a conspiracy which is using the LGBT issue as a means to deprive us of freedom of religion and speech. It is a cunningly devised plan, and Gov. Huckabee is right: It will criminalize the Christian Faith, along with all other faiths that hold that such conduct is contrary to God’s will. This thing has been the result of long range planning based upon careful thought, and the real design is control, control. control as freedom is the anathema of the conspiracy that runs the world which has been bragging for years that they run the world. Suggest reading Carroll Quigley’s Tragedy and Hope, 1200+ pages of the dullest history one could read until you come to those parts that tell about the conspiracy. He also outlined the religious views of the conspirators, pluralism as opposed to, as the call it, determinism. There are many books out on the subject. One must read them with a critical eye, lest one be mislead in understanding.

      1. I suppose the number of books by and about the conspiracy constitute a library of some quarter of a million works. That is a guesstimate., but, I suspect, it is not far off from the truth. Try reading IBM and The Holocaust, a book by a fellow named Black. Would you believe Hitler had computers (punch card kind) to help him gather the Jews for the death camps? We have been brainwashed into believing that no conspiracy that big could be hid. They don’t try to hide it; the practice it openly for the most part, and, since they control the media, they can put any spin on what they do. And we will buy the spin, never thinking through what we read or the real events taking place.

  5. I am about to graduate from Talbot School of Theology (BIOLA) and as an attorney that has practiced law for 20 years I am dedicating my life and profession to defending Christians in this predicament.
