Are You Superstitious?

Are you superstitious about the new year?

I didn’t grow up in a superstitious family, but my family had a healthy appreciation for the traditions of their ancestors.

For example, while sweeping up something or the other on New Year’s Day, my mother would smile and say you’re not supposed to sweep on New Year’s Day because you will be sweeping all your money away.

Martha and I aren’t superstitious either, but the one year we didn’t have pork, cabbage, and black-eyed peas for New Year’s Day, we had a lot of sickness during the year. Martha said, “We’re not going to miss having the traditional food of New Year’s Day again.”

My family said whatever you did the first day of the year you would do the remainder of the year. Therefore, the whole family (mama included) was happy to spend all New Year’s Day watching football.

What would happen if what we did on New Year’s Day really became a pattern for the whole year?

If that’s the case, what should you do on New Year’s Day?

First, we should spend time in the presence of God. Reading Scripture, praying, and getting to know God would be a great habit to establish on the first day of the new year.

Second, we should seek to treat others as we want to be treated. Kindness, compassion, gentleness, and love should be the order of New Year’s Day. What a year it would be if every day were filled with those qualities!

Third, New Year’s day should be a day in which we speak out and live out our faith. If ever there was a time to be silent about your faith, it certainly isn’t now. Now is the time to be bold. Now is the time to speak up.

During the Christmas season I’m almost certain more people told me “Merry Christmas” than any other time I can remember. I believe they did that deliberately. I believe we should be bold in deliberately seeking for opportunities to give a reason for the hope that we have in Christ (1 Peter 3:15)..

Do these things and you’ll have a great New Year’s day and a great beginning for the remainder of the year.

What will you do deliberately on January 1 to set the tone for your entire year?
