When God created the universe, the creation of human beings took center stage.

Genesis one and two both speak of the creation of humans. Each account puts the man and woman at the center of everything.

In Genesis 1, God speaks of the creation from the point of view of the universe. He brought everything into existence as He progressively spoke the world into place. As the Spirit of God hovered over the waters, God spoke for light, atmosphere, seas and dry land, the sun, moon, and stars, vegetation, land animals, and finally human beings.

The humans are the crown of God’s creation.

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground’ ” (Genesis 1:27-28).

The importance of mankind is seen in the fact they are created last (at the zenith of creation) and in the very image and likeness of God. The man is given the responsibility to have dominion over all the animals and to use the earth for his good. Notice that this picture of creation is about mankind. He created them male and female.

Genesis 2 shows us creation up close and personal. It is about family and the beauty of it. God created the man but knew that man needed a helper to complement his existence. He created woman to come alongside the man to complete him and fulfill him.

God’s purpose shows why family is the way it is: “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). When His critics asked Jesus about marriage, He directed them to this verse and the purpose of God in giving the man and the woman.

This pictures the beauty of the love relationship of a man and woman. They were made for each other.

We are called to love and be loved.

We are called to walk alongside our mates and care for them as we walk through life together.
