Speak to My Heart, Lord Jesus

I love James admonition to “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:7).

I love that it is such a strong exhortation. You might ask, “What do I need to do to be closer to God?” James’ answer is to follow the Old Testament idea of “Seeking God with all your heart.” I simply need to tell God that I want to know Him and want to be close to Him. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.

I also love the hope of this promise. God is not going to withhold Himself from us. He wants us to know Him.

Last weekend, I preached about what God wants from us. While the question may seem daunting considering all God could expect of us, the answer is not complicated or judgmental at all. God simply wants you. Draw near to God, and God will draw near to you.

Maybe you’ve been away from God or possibly you have never really given yourself to God. What should you do?

Simply seek Him by drawing near to God.

Earlier this week in my private worship, I found myself quoting this poem by B.B. McKinney:

Speak to my heart, Lord Jesus, Speak that my soul may hear; Speak to my heart, Lord Jesus, Calm every doubt and fear.

Speak to my heart, Lord Jesus, Purge me from every sin; Speak to my heart, Lord Jesus, Help me the lost to win.

Speak to my heart, Lord Jesus, It is no longer mine: Speak to my heart, Lord Jesus, I would be wholly thine.

Speak to my heart, oh, speak to my heart, Speak to my heart, I pray; Yielded and still, seeking Thy will, Oh, speak to my heart today.
