The Word for Today (September 20, 2019)

“Thus says the Lord: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his arm, whose heart turns away from the Lord. He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit’ ” (Jeremiah 17:5-8).

You and I are people of the two ways. Like in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, each of us has two ways. We can take the broad gate and easy route and face trouble and hardship or we can choose the narrow gate and hard way and receive the blessing of God.

This is exactly what Jeremiah received from the Lord. If we trust in ourselves and turn our hearts from the Lord (this was Jeremiah’s doctrine of sin), we will get what our own works will provide. This is not much.

However, if we trust in the Lord, we will receive what only God can provide which is abundant blessings. Paul spoke of God supplying all our needs according to His riches in glory.

While the choice seems rather easy, we all know the hold this world, our sinful nature, and even our enemy the devil hold over us.

Pray that God would give you His strength to turn from your own way to the way of God.
