Are You Ready for the End of the World?

Harold Camping is an 89 year radio talk show host who has figured out that Jesus is coming to take His church away this Saturday, May 21, 2011.  Camping believes that the Bible serves as a cosmic calendar.  He and others have widely disseminated his prediction for the rapture of the church this Saturday and for the final judgment in October.

I have also have predictions to make–three in fact.

  1. I am sure that Christ will return (many interpretations do not contain a rapture of the church but rather that the church will go through the tribulation).  It might be before Saturday, and it might be later.
  2. My friend David Crosby has made the astute prediction that Mr. Camping will revise his prediction sometime soon.  This is the history of those who have made such predictions through the years.
  3. I predict that this will be our only days to serve God and to glorify Him.  After all, this is what Jesus told us about His coming again.  He told us that no one knew the day or the hour, not even the Son.  He did not emphasize dates and seasons; He emphasized faithful living for God every day of our lives.  He encouraged us to be ready for His coming whenever that might be.

How should you and I respond to these predictions?

First, we should have sympathy and concern for those who may be disillusioned if these predictions do not come to pass.  Our faith is in Christ not in predictions.

Second, we should be ready for the coming of Christ.  That is what He told us to do.  We should obey Him in all things.  Are you ready by your humble submission to the Lordship of Christ?  Are you seeking to live faithfully for Him every day?  Are you helping get your family and friends ready for that day?

Third, we should do all within our power to know and live the truth.  Jesus said: “I am the truth” (John 14:6).  It is the truth–not predictions–which set you free.  We should seek to share the truth of the Scripture with all those around us.
