Why and How to Pray Scripture

God wants to grow us in our faith. This is the process of sanctification. He sanctifies us, and we work with Him in the process. When you read and study the Bible, pray, and serve, you are working with God in His work of sanctification in our lives.

Praying Scripture is a wonderful part of our growth in Christ.

Here’s why you should do so.

Praying Scripture means that you are praying in the will of God. Because we are praying according to His Word, we can be assured that we are praying in His Will.

Praying Scripture means that we are pleasing God. He gives us His Word. Our praying Scripture shows that we want to please Him (Ephesians 5:10).

Praying Scripture means that we can adequately praise Him. I often feel inadequate to praise God. When I pray the great words of praise to Him, my inadequacy is removed. I particularly pray Psalm 8:1: “O Lord, our LORD, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” I also often pray Psalm 103:1-2: “Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, O my soul and forget not his benefits.”

Finally, praying Scripture means that you will access the power of God in your life. Instead of simply getting what you can do, praying Scripture means that you also receive what God can do to conform you to His image.

My Scripture prayer at this time is Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Praying that verse makes me conscious of what God wants me to be, and through prayer I receive the power of God to do what I cannot do.

Here’s a way to get started.

Simply select a passage of Scripture to pray.  I suggest Philippians 2:5: “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus” who humbled himself and became obedient. You might pick Ephesians 4:32 as well.

Also, spend a few minutes with God to ask Him, “what do you want to change in my life?” Then, select a passge of Scripture to deal with the issue. You may have to read the verse to God first, but soon you will be able to recite it–another wonderful advantage of this new discipline.

What Scripture passage are you planning to pray through? Please leave a comment.

  1. I like Galatians 5:22-26. It’s a great way to remind myself of the attitude of Christ Jesus and what it should look like in my life. I will pray through that, thanks for the advice.

  2. Philippians 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

  3. The 12th chapter of Romans is one of my favorites in the Bible. It instructs us about how we should act as an individual and a church. It serves as a wonderful guide in prayer.

  4. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

I pray this scripture because it is the past that I am having trouble leaving behind. I am struggling to move forward after my husband left me for another woman. Although he was mean and rarely had a kind word for me; somehow the safety I did not even realize I felt is now hard to be without. I know that I must move forward and the lack of my doing so has called God to work in my life in such a way that I would look upward to him. He is calling my name.

  5. Psalm 46:10 ……. be still ……. know that i am God ………because i am trying very hard to learn how to “listen” to Him …. I speak, I pray, I have a lot to say but do I listen? No, that is what I feel I must work on right now

  6. My best assurance of God’s comfort and grace is Philipians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication make your requests known unto God; and the peace of God which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

  7. I like to share with you the passages I pray everyday; found them very comforting: Psalm 118:24, Psalm 81:10, Nehemiah 2:8, Psalm. 84:11, Proverbs 2:7, Psalm 5:12, Psalm 9:9, Psalm 16:11, Psalm 42:5-6, Luke 2:40, Isaiah 30:18, James 4:10, 2 Corinthians 2:14, Habakkuk 3:19, Matthew 19:26, Ephesians 3:20-21, Phillipians 3:12, Colossians 4:5-6, Luke 10:19 plus the teaching of Pastor Waylon on Sundays which I love. it makes my live lighter!
