When You Feel All Alone

When you feel all alone. . .

Remember, that you really aren’t.

Many, many people feel all alone and unappreciated. All you have to do is look at the epidemic of suicide, particularly among younger people. I can’t say how they feel, but there must be an overwhelming sense of aloneness–that they are all alone and that no one cares. They may also feel that if any one does care, that they can’t help.

What can you do when you are alone and depressed?

First, open the drapes, go outside, sit in the sunshine. The sun is literally therapeutic. Take advantage of every opportunity to get outside. Also, overcome the temptation in stay in the bed. Get up, and get out.

Second, go to church. Churches, in spite of being filled with spots and blemishes (sinful people), are places where someone will talk with you and you will be loved for who you are. Find a church and attend it regularly. Don’t miss. Ask to help with anything–cleaning up, parking cars, greeting. Churches love volunteers. People who work aren’t alone.

Third, find someone in trouble and help them out. It’s amazing how our world doesn’t look nearly as bad when we are trying to help other people. No matter how hard life feels, I can guarantee that there are many people who are hurting even worse than you. They need your help. Give them help, and you will get help in return: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matt. 5:7).

Fourth, find someone to listen to. If you listen to others, they will listen to you. They may need to talk and to be with someone even more than you do.

Fifth, read, memorize, and pray Scripture. (You can read about praying Scripture here http://waylonbailey.com/2011/08/why-and-how-to-pray-scripture/)                                                                                         .

Here are verses that I pray often.

Psalm 121 is a psalm that tells us that our help comes from the Lord who constantly watches over us. The psalm ends with this verse: “the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:6). Jesus promised that God the Holy Spirit would be with His followers: “But the counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14: 26). Jesus implied that we could live without fear because of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

These are simple concepts that help us cope. You are not alone.

  1. Thanks Waylon. Your last post spoke directly to me. Although the Lord healed me from a long painful illness I’m still dealing with residual problems that tend to cause bouts of depression. I know God is there and will take care of me. Your blog inspires me and is very uplifting. I pray you and your family will continue to receive God’s blessings and strength from him to be our good shepherd.

  2. Steve, I am thrilled that you find this helpful. That makes the effort worthwhile. We all deal with these issues from time to time and in varying degrees. May God bless you today.

  3. Your post was a great comfort to me today. I am always consumed with fear although I have no rational reason for being afraid. I was recently told that the message “Do Not Fear” is in the Bible over 300 times. Your post reminded me once again that God does not want me to be afraid and I am going to keep the Bible verses that you quoted today close to my heart. Thank you.

  4. I am serving at a church in Virginia and like most churches the carnal internal politics just gets at me…and I’m only the Associate Pastor….but your words were from the Lord and they encouraged me! I miss South LA sometimes for sure too!!

  5. I have to thank Pastor Jeff Ginn for sending me this website. The Lord’s timing is just wonderful. Pastor Jeff knows my situation and right now I am going through a rough time. I have had depression for many years and I am currently being treated for it. I have a family that doesn’t understand and really doesn’t care to. Thanks for your encouraging words. I know the Lord is with me every step of the way, even through the struggles.

  6. Depression is really hard and frankly most people don’t understand it. I am thrilled that you are giving your best to handle it and that you have good people like Pastor Jeff around you. So thankful that you found encouragement in my post.
