My Responsibilities as President of the Louisiana Baptist Convention

I am humbled to be elected president of the Louisiana Baptist Convention.

I am also deeply appreciative of all those who have called, texted, emailed, tweeted, posted on Facebook, and spoken to me in person. Thanks for your affirmation and love.

Let me explain the convention. Each year the convention elects a president who will preside over the annual meeting (to be held next year at FBC, West Monroe) and who serves as an ex officio member of all the boards and agencies of the Convention (such as the boards of Louisiana College, the children’s home, and the Baptist Message). Along with various other duties, the president also appoints three members to serve on the Committee on Committees.

The duties of the president of the convention are important because I do have a very demanding job as pastor of First Baptist Church, Covington, Louisiana. I want all of you (but especially the members of FBC) to know that I intend to give my best to the full-time responsiblity of serving as pastor of First Baptist Church. Hopefully, you will not even notice the few times that I will be away from the office. As you know, we are blessed to have other pastors of our church who aid me in the ministry and allow me to be involved with addtional opportunities to serve God.

Fortunately, the Louisiana Baptist Convention has a wonderful system of governance. Dr. David Hankins serves as the Executive Director of the Convention. This is a CEO type position. He oversees the LBC staff and directs the day to day operations of the convention. The Executive Board is made up of representatives of all the Baptist associations in the state. They meet two or three times a year and work with the Executive Director to give additional direction to the mission and ministry of the convention.

I hope to use the position of president of the convention to continue the good work begun by others. It will be a good year to serve as president. Baptist work began in the state in 1812. We get to celebrate the 200th year of both statehood and of Baptist work in Louisiana in the same year.

We just had a very unified convention centered on the Word of God and the centrality of Christ. I believe that God honors what He commands. When we exalt Christ and obey the Bible, He will bless His people. I am praying for a spiritual awakening in Louisiana. I hope that you will join me and the 1600 Baptist congregations in praying that God will do a mighty work in our state.

We can make a difference if we love one another and love our lost friends and family members. When we place God where He belongs in our lives, He will bless us. May God bless us as we seek to please Him.

  1. Waylon, Congratulation on your election as President of the Louisiana Baptist Convention. May the Lord Bless you and Martha in this most important endeavor for Louisiana Baptist. You and Martha are the finest example of a Spirit filled couple.

  2. Bro. Bailey,
I am thrilled to have you as President of our Convention. What an exciting time for you! I remember once hearing someone say, “How can you expect God use you in big roles if you don’t follow His leadership in small roles”? You are being used by God for this big role b/c He is pleased with you as His child. Ken and I are so proud of you. We’ll continue to pray for you and Ms. Martha as you both minister to so many. You both have helped me more than you may ever know. Congratulations and may God continue to bestow many blessings your way. 🙂
