A Blessed People

For all of the problems in the United States of America, we are a blessed people.

I hope that every day is a day of thanksgiving for you. We are blessed to live in a land of plenty and to be people who are free to vote, protest, speak, and worship. In my way of thinking, the first amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America is a blessing from God. I thank God for the right to worship Him openly and without fear. I thank God that we can communicate the Gospel to others.

A large part of the blessing of this country is that we are founded on the Judeo-Christian worldview, a worldview found in the Scripture. Many years ago, a bishop of the Anglican Church spoke in the chapel at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He pointed out the connection between democracy and the biblical worldview. When you look on a map, wherever you see democracy you also see the influence of the Christian religion. I am thankful to live in a democracy.

I am also thankful to have a small part in helping people outside our country know Christ. Each week that you give at FBC Covington, part of your offering is used to promote the Gospel outside our country. The International Mission Board has 5,000 missionaries around the globe. Those missionaries have 4,000 children who depend on us!

The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions provides half of the support for these missionaries. Last year, Southern Baptists gave $145 million for this mission offering. It sounds like a wonderful accomplishment until you realize the $145 million represents only $10 per member!

So here’s my request. Make sure that your family gives no less than the $10 per member of FBC. Actually, our offering each year doubles that amount. We are able to do so because many people give $1000 each or more. Many people, maybe most, give nothing at all. If you’ve never given before, would you give at least $10 per family member this year? If you have given, would you prayerfully consider giving more? We have much for which to be thankful. We need to share the Good News.

Many of you do not attend the church where I lead, but you probably do attend a church. Your church has offerings that seek to reach the world. Would you give an additional amount to help people know Christ? God will bless His people as they care for others and follow His commands.

All orthodox Christian churches recognize the “Great Commandment” to make disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:16-20). Please help us to carry out this command.

Remember, this is more important than life and death.
