“These Men Need Jesus”

In 1991, Ralph and Lynda Bethea and their four children lived in Kenya, serving as missionaries to the Kenyan people. They were part of a large awakening to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Kenya.

I still remember reading the news accounts (you can search the Internet under “Lynda Bethea missionary in Kenya” to get more of the story) of Lynda’s death and the attack Ralph and Lynda suffered.

Traveling late at night, Ralph and Lynda Bethea came upon what appeared to be an injured man in the road. Their friends later said that their stopping was exactly what they knew Ralph and Lynda would do. It was who they were.

The “injured man” was a trap and an ambush. The result was that Lynda Bethea was beaten so severely that she died before help could come. Ralph also suffered critical injuries.

They were actually attacked twice, even though they gave their money and complied with the demands of the attackers.

I remember writing down this account twenty years ago. After the attackers finally left, Ralph Bethea crawled to his wife’s side and held her in his arms. Before she died, she told him four things:

1. Don’t hate these men. These men need Jesus.

2. Take care of my children.

3. I love you.

4. I’m going home.

I thank God for people who obey the call of God and go to the ends of the earth to take the Gospel and obey Christ. May you and I live obedient and faithful lives. May we hear our Savior say: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
