The Meaning of Ordination

Today we have the opportunity to ordain two men to Christian service—Kevin Harless to Gospel Ministry and Jason Hunt as a deacon of First Baptist Church. The ordination service will be at 6:30 PM Sunday night. We have a reception and fellowship time in the Steeple Foyer after the service. I hope that you will plan to attend.

An ordination service is unique. Ordination simply means that we as a church affirm what Kevin (as a minister of the Gospel) and Jason (as a deacon) are telling us. We agree with them that God has placed them in this place and given them this ministry.

This service is also unique because we ordain a minister and a deacon together.

In the New Testament, ordination (laying on of hands) coincided with the commissioning of a new ministry. For example, when Paul and Barnabas left for the first missionary journey, the church at Antioch layed hands on them and prayed for their ministry. This is what we want to do with Kevin and Jason. We want to affirm them in ministry and pray for God’s blessings upon them.

Serving God is never a lone decision or ministry. It involves the church and it involves the family.

I am thankful for these two families and for their desire to follow God.

Kevin and Tiffany Harless are a team. They both work in service to God. God called Kevin to ministry and Tiffany has followed and encouraged. The Harless’ have three girls, Chloe, MacKenzie, and Gracie.

Jason and Deanna Hunt exhibit what we want in Christian families. I am thankful for their ministry and for their working together to serve God. They have two girls—Bailey and Lundin.

We are thankful also to have members of their extended families join us for the time of worship.

Please pray for these men and their families as they seek to follow God.

  1. Thank you so much for each blog. They make my day special. I have a broken bone in my left foot and in a boot and have to stay off my foot, so your blog and reading is great . I am so excited, Simple Goodness, called me and I was able to order Martha’s new book and they said they would get her to sign it, so that makes it even more special——can’t wait. you both are very special to me and are in my prayers always. Thanks again.
