My Prayer For The Louisiana Senate

I had the privilege yesterday to pray at the opening of the session for the Louisiana State Senate, an opportunity afforded at the invitation of Senator Jack Donohue of the 11th Senatorial District and Senator Sharon Weston Broome, President Pro Tempore of the Senate. I am thankful for the opportunity to pray for our elected leaders according to the command of our Lord. God has much to say about praying for those in authority. I have placed the Scripture references in my prayer to remind us of our need to do everything in God’s way and according to His will.

I was especially thankful to have my grandson, Jake Mizell (age 10), with me.

This was my prayer yesterday:

Our Heavenly Father,

We thank thee for the privilege of standing in this august body in the capitol building to plead for your blessings and leadership for our state. We want to thank you for those who lead. You have told us to pray for all those who are in authority, that through them we might be blessed to lead peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Our Father, we thank you for these servants of yours who help to bless our lives by their service to you (Romans 13:1-8).

Father, we thank you for our nation and for the great State of Louisiana, and we pray for your favor and your blessings.

We acknowledge, O God, that we need you. We confess that we are sinful people who need your healing touch. Father, you have told us if we will confess our sin, humble ourselves, and seek your face, you will forgive our sin and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14). Dear God, we ask for your healing of our land.

Father, you taught us to pray, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:9-13). Lord, we know before your kingdom can come on earth we must crown you the king and master of our lives. I pray you will bless these women and men that your will might be done in this place.

Father, we know this day is filled with large decisions which will determine our future. I pray for wisdom and knowledge for these men and women. Please direct them as you did Joshua in perilous times to be strong and courageous, not turning from the direction of the Lord but being very strong and courageous, not terrified, not discouraged, knowing that the Lord our God will be with us wherever we go (Joshua 1:6-9).

Dear God, we acknowledge you as the master of the senate and the master of the state and we ask your blessings on us.

In Jesus name we pray,

Amen

  1. When I was in Ponchatoula Tank Powell asked me to do the same and it was an honor. The recognition they gave me still hangs on my office wall. Thanks for being faithful to the Lord!!
