On March 28, 2012, I heard Steve Scheibner’s story about September 11, 2001.
When you hear his story, you won’t soon forget it.
Steve Scheibner flew airplanes for American Airlines. On September 10, 2001, he bid to fly in the cockpit for a flight from Logan International in Boston to Los Angeles,California. Because of the seniority system, another pilot outbid Steve and Steve stayed home on September 11. The pilot who took his place died as American Airlines flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. It was one of the most awful days in American history.
Steve’s story is chronicled in his wife’s book In My Seat. Mary Ann Scheibner tells the compelling story of how another pilot died in Steve’s place.
When I heard Steve’s testimony last month, he told how another man died in his place, but he emphasized something else. Steve said two men died in his place. One man gave him physical life for a few more years. The other man gave him spiritual life for all eternity.
Steve is a believer (so was the pilot who died) who understands the power of the death of Christ on our behalf. Christ died for us. He died so that we would not have to die spiritually. He who knew no sin, became sin for us.
What Christ did for us can’t be replaced. His death is a once and for all sacrifice which can never be replicated.
Thanks be to God who gives us the victory in Christ Jesus our Lord.
