Quotations You Can Use (May 18, 2012)

“Personally I find great comfort and encouragement in the face of my fallibility by maintaining a close relationship with the Bible. . . . It cannot be stressed too much that the permanent address at which the word of God may be found is the Bible. More of God’s speaking has come in conjunction with study and teaching of the Bible than with anything else”–Dallas Willard, Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God, 183.

“Of what use is it to discourse learnedly on the Trinity, if you lack humility and therefore displease the Trinity? Lofty words do not make a man just or holy, but a good life makes him dear to God. I would far rather feel contrition than be able to define it. If you knew the whole Bible by heart, and all the teachings of the philosophers, how would this help you without the grace and love of God?–Thomas a Kempis.

“We pastors are so busy bringing encouragement to others in discovering their own spiritual gifts or abilities that we often fail to be an encouragement in this vein to those who love us most. Build up your wife. Encourage her in the Lord. Challenge her to exercise the gifts of love and service with which Christ has equipped her”–O.S. Hawkins, The Pastor’s Primer, 218.

“Sometimes we’re so concerned about giving our children what we never had growing up, we neglect to give them what we did have growing up”–James Dobson.

  1. Mother-in-law in surgery this morning. Wife with her in San Antonio. General anesthetic required. Minor Surgery never minor when patient is afib in 80’s. Interesting perspective of benefits of those who invest in others with benefits that pay medical and subsistence vs. those who have followed Christ into the wilderness, who have watched other “like-minded” followers die in sad conditions and mostly alone. “The first hundred years is the hardest.” Fred Matthew

    Good quotes. Thanks!

Carl Jung said: “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”

“A sense of duty is useful in work but offensive in personal relations.” – Bertrand Russell

The Navy Diver is not a fighting man, he is a salvage expert. If it is lost underwater, he finds it. If it’s sunk, he brings it up. If it’s in the way, he moves it. If he’s lucky, he will die young, 200 feet beneath the waves, for that is the closest he’ll ever get to being a hero.

Nine! The Navy Diver is not a fighting man, he is a salvage expert. Ten! If it is lost underwater, he finds it. If it’s sunk, he brings it up. If it’s in the way, he moves it. Eleven! If he’s lucky, he will die young, 200 feet beneath the waves, for that is the closest he’ll ever get to being a hero. Hell, I don’t know why anybody would want to be a Navy Diver.
