What We Know About the Return of Christ

Like the whole subject of death and resurrection, the return of Christ contains many, many areas of which we are not aware.  Yet, many areas are readily available to those who believe.

Let’s look at areas of which we can be certain.

First, Christ will return to the earth to gather His own. That gathering will also be a separating of the saved from the lost or as Jesus put it the wheat from the tares.

Recently, I wrote about the gathering of atheists in Washington, D.C. in March. At that time I said something which offended many atheists–I called them lost. I meant to convey my sorrow and did not mean to offend.

Lost is an appropriate word. If the return of Christ is true and certain as the Word of God indicates, the return of Christ will be a time when those apart from the promises of God will experience lostness–the sense that everything of value is lost. They will experience the sorrow of separation from God first and then everything of goodness as well.

Second, we will be given a resurrection body. This body will be imperishable and immortal. It will no longer be subject to weakness and decay.

Third, the defeat of death will finally be revealed to all. At that point, the saying from the Old Testament will be assured: “death has been swallowed up in victory.” Truly, there will no more tears, no more sorrow, no more grieving. As we rise to meet the Lord, will we be taunting death? “O death, where is your sting?” Death will no longer have its sting.

Fourth, sin will have lost its power. In the resurrection, sin will have no power over us. For the first time ever, we will be free from the sin of Adam. No wonder at this point Paul broke out in thanksgiving to God: “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Finally, for all of these reasons we know that our labor for God has eternal meaning. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory!

  1. Dr. Bailey,

I just wanted to encourage you to continue to speak the truth in your blog. I was surpised that atheists would be offended by calling them lost. Do they really think that they are saved and will go to heaven? They don’t even beleive that there is a God? We live in a strange world. Well anyway, keep teaching and preaching the truth.

  2. So, what you are saying is that there will be no victory for the Bride of Christ until He comes or we die? That is something to ponder. No wonder a “Christian” feels entitled to take advantage of a situation to feather his own nest at the expense of a Christian in distress and other “Christians” stand by, as it is none of their concern. Romans 12: 4-6. After all, “it is a private matter.”

Glad God knows; and of course to Him there are no secrets, are there?

  3. I was happy to see this summary of yesterday’s very good sermon. It makes it easy to file for future reference and to send to my family and friends.
