What Will You Do With God?

In college, I had a number of close “preacher-boy” friends. One of my friends grew up near me. We had a close and abiding friendship. He was one of the most naturally humorous people I’ve ever met. Most of the time he didn’t mean to be funny, he simply was. He was a joy to be around.

Like the rest of us, he preached at every opportunity (I still do). He often served small churches as an “interim” pastor, meaning he preached until the church could get a new regular pastor. I watched my friend do this over the course of several months. On his last Sunday before the new pastor assumed his ministry at the church, my friend would preach the same sermon entitled: “Now That You’ve Got Him, What Are You Going To Do With Him?” I never heard the sermon but I always thought it was a good subject for a church ready to begin with a new pastor.

It’s a question which ought to be asked about a number of areas.

We ought to ask this about the teaching concerning the resurrection of the dead. In a sense, this is exactly what Paul asked. In his conclusion to his teaching about the resurrection of the dead, Paul challenged the saints at Corinth to “stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves full to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). Since the resurrection–both Christ’s and ours– is a fact we know our faith is not in vain. Therefore, give your best to serve and please God.

Please God by standing strong and being found faithful. Life is filled with ups and downs, highs and lows. The person who remains steadfast pleases God. God told Joshua to be strong and courageous three times in a few verses (Joshua 1:6-9).  God loves a life that is committed to Him regardless. Habakkuk earnestly sought God and His work. He declared he would rejoice in God in either good or bad (Habakkuk 3:17-19).

The three friends of Daniel faced being burned to death if they did not recant their faith. They spoke glowingly of what God would do to protect them. Then, they added “but even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up” (Daniel 3: 18).

That must make God grin with joy. May you and I please Him with lives which give our very best to God.

  1. Thank you for using your gifts in this way, great post, these really help me while I am working.
    Blessings

  2. YES! This is the revelation of the “Plans for you!” Now to adapt that spirit as members one unto another. It is our “Purpose Driven Life” adapted for the New Covenant within which we are to live. Well Done!!! Praying for VBS. Suffer (let) the little children come unto me. Forbid them not! For of such is the Kingdom of God. Unless you receive as one of these little ones, you will in no wise (way) enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

    Have I remembered correctly, Raboni?
