Tim Tebow And His Mom

On this past Sunday, Father’s Day, Tim Tebow preached at Qualcom Stadium in San Diego before 26,000 people. On Monday, his mother Pam spoke at a pre-convention conference of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Tim spoke at Qualcom Stadium at the invitation of pastor David Jeremiah. He challenged dads to make the sacrifices necessary to get the job of a dad done and finish well. “I encourage you men to get in the game and finish strong for your family, your wife and your sons and daughters.”

Tim Tebow recalled what his father taught him. “Every time I’d go to practice. . . I’d always think about what my dad said to me: Do I really love what I’m doing? Am I passionate about it? And am I willing to sacrifice more than everybody else is willing to sacrifice? Because those three things are easy to say–they’re very hard to do.”

His mom Pam talked about her youngest son, Timmy. She described how she poured Scripture into her children by teaching them Scripture songs–songs she made up for her children to learn the Bible.

Both messages point out many valuable lessons. This is the one I want to emphasize.

Notice the importance of a mother and a father to give their children the spiritual guidance they need. Both of Tim Tebow’s parents were instilling spiritual lessons to all their children. They did it not as a special time but as a part of life.

This is exactly what Moses told the people of Israel to do. “These commandments I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

When our children hear our words and see our actions–consistent and authentic, it sets the heart of the child toward God and toward the things of God.

Both Tim and Pam agreed on something of vital importance. Each one described Tim in the same way, not as a football player who is a Christian but “as a Christian who happens to play football.”
