Practical Helps For Using The Bible

Where can I get help to study the Bible?

I love to hear that question. It means that someone is interested in knowing God and knowing about His Word. The fact is there are many aids for studying the Scripture. Some are expensive and hard to find, but most are easily accessible.

Yesterday’s post about living for Christ daily provoked a question about where to find Scripture pertaining to different topics. The post suggested printing out a verse or verses which address whatever issue you are experiencing. One of the readers asked how he could find those verses. We must work with God for our sanctification–the process by which we become like Him. Paul asked the believers at Corinth to do just that: “Therefore, dear friends, since we have such promises (that God would dwell  with His people and be a Father to them), let us cleanse ourselves from every impurity of the flesh and spirit, completing our sanctification in the fear of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 7:1). I became excited because my friend wanted to cooperate with God concerning his sanctification. It pleases God as well.

These are basic resources I suggest for studying the Bible.

A Bible dictionary will help you when you are stuck with a concept or idea that you may be unfamiliar with. A good Bible dictionary will help get you unstuck and moving forward. The Bible covers at least 1,000 years of history and culture. Therefore, you will find plenty of opportunity to consult a Bible dictionary. (Martha and I are working together at our table. I have just noticed a Bible dictionary right next to me.)

Many people find a concordance helpful. Strong’s Concordance is widely used and easy to find. You can even download it through various sites.

I do my daily reading on my iPad using Olivetree.com. You can find several good translations and helpful aids. I read 2 Corinthians 7:1 yesterday and highlighted it, not knowing that a few hours later I would look for my highlight and quote it for this blog. You can purchase and download the above reference aids through Olivetree.com

For finding verses for specific topics or when you know there is a verse you can’t find, go to Biblegateway.com. It advertises itself as the largest Christian website. I certainly find it valuable and go to it often. You should be able to find what you want. Also, you can use it to consult many different translations.

Also, your church library was set up to help you in these areas. Go to the folks who run your media library and ask for help. They will be thrilled to assist you.

Here’s the point. You must be intentional about your Christian growth. As you set goals, discipline yourself, and follow through, you will make much progress.

You will be blessed for doing so.
