Quotations You Can Use (July 27, 2012)

“Religion, so far as it is genuine, is in essence the response of created personalities to the Creating Personality, God. ‘This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent’ “–A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God, 11.

“. . .there are really only three decisions you can make about any piece of information: Toss it; File it; Act on it. . . . It’s no accident I list ‘toss it’ as your first option. I’m convinced that our ability to achieve goals is directly related to our willingness to use the wastebasket, whether it’s the circular file next to your desk or the trashcan icon on your computer. I’ve no doubt that your stress level will decrease as the amount of stuff in your wastebasket increases”–Barbara Hemphill, Taming the Office Tiger: The Complete Guide to Getting Organized at Work, 14-16.

“Accordingly, the greatest need you and I have–the greatest need of collective humanity–is renovation of the heart. That spiritual place within us from which outlook, choices, and actions come has been formed by a world away from God. Now it must be transformed”–Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart: Putting on the Character of Christ, 14.

“I’ve learned that great leaders are first of all great servants–and that great service is modest, understated, in speech and action. Understatement is self-restraint, and self-restraint is hardly a sign of weakness. On the contrary, wisely used, few things carry more power”–Mark DeMoss, The Little Red Book of Wisdom, 28-29.

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

  1. Was Barbara Hemphill the wife of the Dr. Hemphill who brought the argument for moving First Baptist Church of NOLA from the corner of St. Charles and Napoleon Avenue?
The congregation was presented charts of downward attendance except in two areas which were called anomalies. Another name given for evidence of the Holy Spirit at work. I wondered what Dr. Mark Short would have had to say about that presentation. Moving forward, learning from the past.
    Blessings!
