What The Holy Spirit Does For Us

God’s gift of the Holy Spirit opened the doors of the church to the world (Acts 2). In terms of turning points, the gift of the Holy Spirit certainly fits near the top of the list.

What does God’s gift of the Holy Spirit do for us?

First, the gift of the Spirit insures that God is with truly with us. It is important to remember that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. Many Christians tend to think of the Holy Spirit as an “it” or an “outsider” or something wholly different from God’s work in the past.

The Holy Spirit is God with us in every place and every time. Because of the humanity of Jesus, he limited Himself to a small group of people for a three year period of time. The Holy Spirit is not limited in this way. Therefore, God the Holy Spirit is with us in spite of space or time.

Second, the gift of the Holy Spirit means we are never alone. When I give my testimony, I try to tell others how I have never been alone. Since I trusted Christ, God the Holy Spirit has been with me.

Third, the gift of the Holy Spirit means that we have access to the power of God in our lives. In the Old Testament, the Spirit indicated the power of God. At creation, the Spirit hovered over the face of the waters. In the early kingdom, the Spirit came over leaders and prophets to give them the power of God. In this new time, God’s Spirit is with each of us enabling believers to go beyond what we can do on our own.

Finally, the gift of the Holy Spirit works in our lives to convince us of sin and righteousness. He is the tender Spirit, working within us to show us the ways and plans of God.

His work is the great work of God. Let us grow close and personal with Him, knowing who He is and listening to His gentle promptings.

  1. That section on the Holy Spirit and the power of God encouraged me this morning. The image of the Spirit hovering over waters as creation was beginning to be formed — that gave me a wonderful sense of His presence and power.

  2. To give one the Power of God or channel a portion of His Power for a specific purpose?
