Taking The Small Steps Of Life

Taking small steps is one of the concepts which helps you through life.

This concept is repeatedly played out in Scripture. Two examples stand out for me.

The first is Moses. God used what Moses thought were “throw away” years to prepare him for one of the most influential jobs in all of history. Israel became a nation and we have the ten commandments because of Moses.

Though Moses must have thought his time in Midian herding sheep was wasted, God used it to prepare Moses for his life mission. His small steps prepared him for a life of leadership.

David is the second example. How could David stand against Goliath? The answer is because he had taken the small steps before. He faithfully cared for his father’s sheep. Because he had fought and overcome lions and bears that attacked the sheep, he had confidence to fight and defeat the giant as well.

Small steps matter.

I want to ask you to take three small steps in your life with God.

First, begin the small step of reading, studying, and fellowshiping with other believers in Bible Study. You can begin simply by reading through a book of the Bible. Why not try the Gospel of Mark? Read a chapter a day to get started. That is a small step that may lead to large steps. Then, find a Bible Fellowship group on Saturday night or Sunday morning. These small steps will have a large payoff.

Second, attend Sunday’s Discovery Class. This is a small step which will help you get connected at FBC. We meet at 5:00 PM in Kidstuf Theater. The Discovery Class is our introduction to life at our church. We talk about doctrine, belief, and the practical aspects of being part of a church.

Third, follow Christ in baptism. I’m sure this seems to be a large step–and it is–but it is really only the beginning point of your relationship with God. This small step in obedience and faith will lead to a lifetime of closeness to God.

Next week we have our “Baptism at the River.” For the last three years we have had baptism services at Bogue Falaya Park in Covington. Please consider making this small step in your life with God by talking with one of our pastors this week and joining us next Sunday, September 2, at 5:00 PM at the park.
