Veteran storm watchers say they’ve never seen a storm like Isaac.

We’ve been watching over a week and still don’t know what it’s going to do. As of right now, it is basically stalled off the Louisiana coast.

Today has been a strange day. I started the day by writing a post about “Waiting On Isaac.” You can read it here.

Well, here it is late Tuesday night and we are still waiting on Isaac. In fact, we spent most of the day without rain or wind. Isaac wasn’t even declared a hurricane until late in the day.  We still have power. We have been blessed.

There are so many things we still don’t know about this storm, and there are so many things that confuss us about life.

Let’s talk about what we do know.

First, we know God is good, wise, loving, and kind. While we don’t know the whys of storms or hardships, we do know God’s heart and compassion for His people.

Second, we know we can trust God in all things. When we trust Him, we experience peace and calmness in the midst of whatever storm we are going through. One of my favorite passages is Isaiah 26:3-4. “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.” We know we can trust in the Rock. When we trust in Him, we experience God’s perfect peace. Third, we know we can help our neighbors with their storms. Right now Southern Baptists and other Christian groups are marshaling their resources to help their neighbors who are both nearby and far away. Late Monday, I met with our parish president and director of emergency operations. They were meeting with people they were counting on to help their neighbors. They know these groups can be counted on for food, clothing, chain saws, and other kinds of assistance. Even now, a feeding unit is scheduled to be at FBC Covington to help provide up to 20,000 meals a day.

Finally, we know God will never leave us or forsake us. That is His promise and my experience. As you pray, think of God as being right there with you. He is. As you face whatever this new day will hold, do your work as if God is right with you. He really is. You can count on Him.
