In 1970 I had the privilege of making my first trip to Israel. My mom and dad paid my way and I accompanied my pastor and Martha’s pastor (the man who performed our wedding ceremony and with whom I roomed). It was a great trip. I didn’t know at the time I would make four more trips to the land of Israel.

One of the parts of the trip I remember occurred when our guide pointed to a small opening (about the size of a half door) and declared it to be what Jesus meant when He noted that it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. I certainly took note of what he said. No camel I had seen on the trip could wriggle through such a small opening.

Fast forward to May 2012. A different guide at a different place pointed to two walls which were converging leaving only a small opening for someone (but not a camel) to squeeze through. He also proclaimed this to be the eye of the needle.

Either man could have been correct, but biblical scholars don’t think so. What do they think is the eye of the needle?

Most biblical scholars believe Jesus referred to a literal needle.

With that thought in mind, you probably are thinking about the impossibility of the camel going through the eye of the needle. That is exactly what Jesus had in mind.

His disciples saw the impossibility as well. That is why they asked: “Who then can be saved?”

Jesus’ point was clear. Salvation with man is impossible, but with God all things are possible. This shows us again that we cannot earn our way into heaven, but we can receive it by faith.

Our salvation depends on what God did for us on cross. The death of Jesus provided the way of deliverance from the curse of sin. Through Christ, the way to God has been opened. We must receive this wonderful gift of God.
