What Pastors Talk About When They Get Together–Part Two

Thanks so much for being interested in our conversations among pastors about how best to lead the church. Leading the church has never been easy, but it seems especially difficult in this age.

What do pastors talk about when they want to learn from one another? Here are the additional subjects we discussed. If you would like to read or reread the previous discussion, please click here.

We discussed discipleship and leadership development. Years ago, I had a church consultant come to FBC Covington. He told me the biggest obstacle I would face would be developing leaders. He was right then, and his assessment holds true today. How do we develop leaders? How do we help people use their gifts for the kingdom of God? This is a real issue.

Jesus gave us the beautiful model of learning from one another as we share the ups and downs of life. Would you look for people to mentor and encourage? When we all work together to help new believers, we can raise up the next generation of leaders.

The most difficult issue we discussed (in my opinion) relates to the twin issues of being the church and proclaiming the gospel to everyone and protecting the flock from those who would harm our children (and adults). We live in a crooked and depraved generation–a generation whose minds have been given over to depravity. How do we work with people who desperately need to the know the living God while protecting the flock?

We must be people of prayer who constantly lift up the body of Christ and who seek God’s leadership.

More than anything else we must remember that the church belongs to Christ. It is His, not mine. He loves it and died for it. We must treat it with love and respect as well. Let us love the church and let us depend on the Spirit to help us with these issues.

  1. Indeed. The Spirit shows up to empower Our Lord’s intent in “The Called.” Then it is not church, but Church. Members, one of another with all the capacity to fulfill His Design from the beginning. AMEN. H’O-lam.

    Thank you.

    Blessings!
