Quotations You Can Use (October 19, 2012)

“Remember you are God’s sword–His instrument–I trust a chosen vessel unto Him to bear His name. In great measure, according to the purity and perfections of the instrument, will be the success. It is not great talents God blesses so much as great likeness to Jesus. A holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God”–Robert Murray M’Cheyne writing to a missionary friend in 1840, quoted by Warren Wiersbe, Be Strong, 82.

”While I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data. The only thing you want is to come back alive”–Felix Baumgartner, skydiver, October 13, 2013.

“When we cry “Abba! Father,” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ–if in fact we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him”–Romans 8:15-17.

“One may look high and land low, but one can never look low and land high. The value of a high aim is inestimable”–Arthur Flake, Building A Standard Sunday School, 12.

“You can eliminate a surprising amount of paper and computer files by using your calendar. The key is to extract the information you need from the paper or the document, enter it in your calendar, and [eliminate the clutter]”–Barbara Hemphill, Taming the Office Tiger: The Complete Guide to Getting Organized at Work, 54.

  1. I may need some guidance on using the calendar as stated. Sounds good.

“Knowing what to do and doing are two different things.”
“A sword unused is of no more value than metal never forged.”
    Eq:
2 Corinthians 7:1 “1 Therefore dear friends, since we have such promises, we should wash ourselves clean from every impurity of the flesh and spirit, making our sanctification complete in the fear of god.”
Titus 2:11-14 “11 For the grace of god has appeared, with salvation for all people, 12 instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great god and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a special people, eager to do good works.”
2 Timothy 2:21 “21 So if anyone purifies himself from these things, he will be a special instrument, set apart, useful to the Master, prepared for every
    good work.”

    Rejection of Immorality
God must reveal the wickedness of sin before many people will reject immorality.
    Preparation
    • Praise God for who He is • Confess your sinfulness and need for cleansing • Allow His Spirit to draw you near • Listen as He speaks to you
    Ask God to…
    • Help national leaders recognize the social destruction caused by public immorality
    • Raise up new entertainment personalities who promote godly values
    • Help the nation’s youth recognize the destructive effects of immoral behavior
    • Help parents reject immorality for the sake of their children and their marriage
    • Convict those who live off of immorality like the pornographers and abortion providers
    • Guide Congress to pass laws that restrict immoral behavior
    • Help churches work with their communities to set new standards for public morality
Where was the Church when I stood alone? Busy grooming itself.

  2. “It was the 20th-century American author and actress Cornelia Otis Skinner who made the following sage observation: One learns in life to keep silent and draw one’s own conclusions.”

What a great picture of going along to get along. It is what most do. Gee, is that the Character of Christ?

Next time you use the word “sophomore” or “sophomoric” think of this. The word is the combination of two Greek words. 1. Sophos: wise. 2. Moros: stupid.

Next time you feel unappreciated think of the creator of the ubiquitous smiley face who earned the grand total of $45.00 for his creative effort.

George Santayana said, “Life is not a spectacle or a feast; it is a predicament.”

    Blessings.

  3. More about quotes:

It occurs to me many do not know who George Santayana is. The following may help:
Santayana is known for the sayings, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” and “Only the dead have seen the end of war.” The latter sentence is often (for example, at the start of the film Black Hawk Down) falsely attributed to Plato; the former appears in Reason in Common Sense, the first volume of Santayana’s five-volume Life of Reason. (In the 1905 Charles Scribner’s Sons edition, it is found on page 284.) Santayana is broadly included among the pragmatists with Harvard University colleagues William James and Josiah Royce. He said that he stood in philosophy “exactly where [he stood] in daily life.”
