Oh No, The Five Second Rule No Longer Holds

Remember the five second rule? This idea holds that if you drop food on the floor or any other surface you can eat it as long as it isn’t there longer than five seconds.

The place I see this rule applied is for parents who have two or more children. For the first child, they meticulously washed everything and made sure the child stayed as germ free as possible. By the time the second child came along, they had forgotten or given up on all of the rules they first thought important. Parents with more than one child must have coined the five second rule. They will let there children eat anything!

Now science has debunked the five second rule. Scientists at San Diego State University in conjunction with the Clorox Corporation did a scientific study using baby carrots. They used a control sample and a sample where the carrots had been placed on a tiled floor, a carpeted floor, and a kitchen counter. They found that germs adhered to the carrots in less than five seconds in all three cases. Guess which surface contained the most germs–the kitchen counter, of course.

This is simply one more case proving life is hard.

I thank God He comes to give us life and that He calls us to trust Him in all things. Life is hard enough as it is.

Jesus came into that kind of world. The Pharisees had put a hedge around the law. They placed tremendous burdens of the Jews of that day.

When Jesus came, he made statements such as “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath” and “you shall know the truth and the truth will make you free.”

Finally, He said: “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

  1. Often we have no idea who “packed our chute.” (Reference a previous blog of yours.) However, when we do, there is honor involved to appreciate the honor that was applied to our benefit. Yes, most of us have no idea what it took for us to experience the “rest” we enjoy. For that was yesterday, forgotten, “Yellow Birds.” (New Book out about returning soldiers.)

    Romans 13:7
“pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes, tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect, and honor to those you owe honor.”

I guess it was in March (still very cold) of 1945 my Dad (alone) ran into a company of SS in the Austrian Alps and arranged for their surrender.  Wonder how many families owe their lives to the fact the well armed artillery and mechanized cavalry unit of the German SS believed they had no recourse but to fight, until my Dad came along.

  2. I can remember as a kid using the 5-second rule alot, and still do with my two girls. But, given this new scientific revelation, I guess I’ll need to use the saying “God made dirt, and dirt don’t hurt.” more often now. 🙂
