Friend, Can You Spare $500?

Friend, can you spare $500.00? You have probably heard the old line coming from The Great Depression asking if someone could spare a dime.

Last week, a national poll revealed that 40% of American families do not have $500 in cash or other liquid assets. Many of these folks live in nice houses and have nice cars but they are teetering on the brink of not having enough to the pay off the credit card or buy the groceries. Some of these folks have a retirement account but not ready cash.

How do save up a nest egg? Last week I wrote about how to save $1 trillion–the amount of last year’s budget deficit. Senator Tom Coburn said you save a trillion dollars by saving a billion at a time. If you would like to read that post, please click here.

How do you save $500? The same way you save a billion or a trillion. You start small and make every dollar count. Before long, you have saved real money.

I certainly don’t think of myself as a financial genius or even being really competent with money. Fortunately, saving money and protecting your family does not require genius. It does require perseverance and discipline. These are qualities we need in most areas of life.

I would suggest two things we all need related to money.

First, you need a little cash. I discovered this when Hurricane Katrina hit our area. I had a credit card but cash was hard to find. Without electricity you can’t use a credit card or access an ATM. At that time, I determined to have a little cash on hand. Remember, you can save in a variety of ways. Soft drinks and expensive coffees are fertile sources for saving a few dollars.

Second, emergencies happen rather frequently. Whether it’s a new transmission or a medical emergency, these things come much too often. We can save ourselves anxiety and stress by preparing ahead.

Preparing ahead and getting ready are found throughout the Scripture. The writer of Proverbs suggested that we go to the ant as an example of hard work and preparation.

Please don’t feel I’m beating you up if you don’t have $500 saved. Rather, use this report like I did at Hurricane Katrina–as a wake up call for life.

    Methods of saving:
    Proverbs 31:3-7
Don’t spend your energy on women or your efforts on those who destroy kings. 4) it is not for kings, Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine or for rulers to desire beer. 5) Otherwise, they will drink, forget what is decreed, and pervert justice for all the oppressed. 6) give beer to one who is dying, and wine to one whose life is bitter. 7) let him drink so that he can forget his poverty and remember his trouble no more.”

Having been in want and in plenty. Having tithed when groceries are in jeopardy and when the choice is which restaurant to choose. It is little to give a high percentage in plenty and much to give 10% in want. When your bank is robbed, living in deficit spending is not pleasant or productive; help comes only from the Lord. His Kingdom Come His Will be Done on earth as it is in Heaven. The wheat and chaff are separated for all to see who have eyes to see. Romans 12:2; James 3:17.

    Thanks! Blessings.
