Two Elections That Count

“Elections have consequences.”

Those were the words of President Barack Obama three and one-half years ago as he begin his term as president.

We should always remember that elections count and that we should take them seriously.

Today, I want to write about two serious elections. The first occurs this weekend as First Baptist Church elects twelve men to serve as deacons for the next two years. These men have been prayed over and looked at. We feel confident with all of these men. At the same time, we believe God has a special plan for this church.

As we vote we should spend time in prayer seeking God’s direction for our vote. We must remember that these are the men who will minister to us in crisis situations. They will be men who will pray as the church makes vital decisions. Please speak to God and listen to His direction.

The other serious election will occur this Tuesday as we elect our president, one-third of the Senate, and 435 representatives. In Louisiana we will vote on constitutional amendments, elect our representatives, and vote for president.

This election for president and vice-president will have consequences. Some of those consequences will be readily apparent while others will only be revealed in the future. For example, the next president will probably appoint two to four Supreme Court justices. Also, many people see this election as a referendum on abortion and same sex marriage. How we vote will determine the future of our country.

Please make sure you vote. Christians should “light” and “salt” the earth. As Americans, we have the privilege and responsibility to vote. We should make sure we help determine an outcome pleasing to God by casting our ballot in a way that pleases Him.

For both of these elections and everything else in life, we should pray and seek God’s Face.

One Response

  1. AMEN!
Salt and Light are what we are told we are to be in His LOVE, His Rest.
    40/40
2 Timothy 2:1-2 “1) You, therefore, my child, be strong in the Grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2) And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
Psalm 133:1 “1) How good and pleasant it is when brothers can live together!”
1 Peter 2:13-15 “13) Submit to every human institution because of the Lord, whether to the emperor as the supreme authority, 14) or to governors as those sent out by Him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do Good. 15) For it is God’s will that you, by doing Good, silence the ignorance of foolish people.”

I prefer the translations of Psalm 133:1 that begin with “Behold.” It is a reminder for me to listen, to pay attention, to stand in awe, to observe a wonderment, to note that which was intended from the beginning. I prefer the use of the words “Dwell” and “Unity.” Words that describes a single purpose, a team, like-mindedness, the parts of an empowered Force working together to achieve an objective. These words set the tone to understand (glimpse, perhaps only the hind parts) the importance of such an achievement, the “Precious Oil.” It is an achievement which does not just happen; it is intentional, purposeful, and desirable. All in Christ (Messiah, the one who saves “us”), everyone, the whole body of the Bride, all members one of another is the picture I see; the reality I seek. Seems I have good company; yet all we like sheep have gone astray. Each turning to his own way. “Shall we neglect so great a Salvation?” was the question put in many forms through many years and still remains as poignant.

    Blessings!
