What Should This Day Be?

For several days, I have thought and prayed about what I should write on election day. As you might imagine, my ideas have run the gamut of thoughts, emotions, hopes, and dreams.

But, I am an unashamed follower of Christ. I love Him even more than family, friends, and country.

As I consider this day, I feel led to ask you to do these things as you consider the future of our country.

First, make this a day of fasting. If you are like me, I don’t fast very much, but I have felt led to fast. In the New Testament, Jesus fasted in times of grief and pain, those times when He naturally felt need. That’s the way I have felt for several days, grief and hurt for the direction of our nation.

Fasting can take many different forms. You might fast for a meal or a day or simply as cutting back on certain foods. However you do so, it should be to God and for God. It should be out of grief for your sin and not as a reaction to someone else. It should be private rather than public. (It’s hard to write a blog encouraging you to fast and keep it private, but please indulge me in this).

Fasting should be a spiritual discipline to help you focus on God.

Second, make this a day of prayer in which you ask God for His leadership and His blessings. Ask Him to forgive you and ask Him to bless the United States of America. Ask Him again to make us the united states.

Third, make this a day of voting. What a sacred privilege this is. Yesterday, I asked my grandson what he would do today (a school holiday). He answered: “first, we’ll go vote. I don’t know after that.” Please teach your children the importance of voting.

Christians should vote. We should seek to “light” and “salt” our country.

Christians should vote prayerfully, thoughtfully, and wisely.

May God bless us this day.

  1. Thank you Waylon. We are a nation with so much that many of us can choose what we fast from. May we truly humble ourselves, pray, seek God and turn from the things God hates, the things that hurt, sin. Praise God for His promise of healing!
