Simple Truths About Profound Matters

You can’t read a letter of Paul without being amazed at his thankfulness.

Paul’s appreciation for the church at Thessalonica is a good example: “We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in the our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-3). To the church at Philippi he wrote these words: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:3-6).

Notice these simple truths about thanksgiving.

First, thanksgiving comes from a profound understanding and appreciation for God. I suppose those who don’t know God can express appreciation, but we certainly know that our growing knowledge of God produces more profound thanksgiving. This, no doubt, is the reason the first attempt at national thanksgiving came from people who knew God and gave Him glory for all their blessings.

Second, thanksgiving is expressed to God. He alone is the source of all blessings. Paul knew with James that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father above (James 1:17).

Third, thanksgiving is about God. Notice how Paul expressed thanks for the people of the church at Thessalonica who showed their love for God by their work, labor, and endurance. Paul knew that even their good works had come from God. Paul showed that good works are inspired by the work of God in our lives. Our faith, love, and hope spur us on to good works and kind actions.

In the days ahead, reflect on God and you will naturally reflect on the good gifts of God.

May God grant you days of thanksgiving and joy.

  1. Eph. 2:10 took on a new meaning for me as I read the third section of your devo today, Waylon. As you know, the Scripture references the good works that God has “prepared for us to do”.

Greeting each day with the knowledge that God has already prepared faith and service adventures for us should, indeed, fill us with thanksgiving and anticipation!
