Getting Ready For Christmas

December is finally here, and it’s time to get ready for Christmas.

How do you get ready for something with so many traditions and so many hassles?

Getting ready for Christmas means getting ready to worship God and to see the significance of what God has done in our world.

Here are my suggestions for getting ready for Christmas.

First, spend time in God’s word. Read the narratives concerning the birth of Christ in Matthew (1-2) and Luke (1-2). Notice the differences in the two stories. For example, Matthew gives the story from the perspective of Joseph while Luke looks at the life of Mary. Notice that Luke gives us the day of Jesus  birth while Matthew gives both the before and after. Other passages to read include Philippians 2:1-11 and John 1.

I am always fascinated with the time line of Christmas. A close look at Matthew 1-2 will show you the events of Jesus’ life until age three or four. As you look at the narratives closely, you will see God at work. When you see how God worked, you will be drawn closer to Him–a sure prescription for getting ready for Christmas.

Reading Scripture will take you from an earthly perspective of Christmas to a heavenly look. Looking through God’s eyes will help you really get ready for Christmas.

Second, seek God at Christmas. As you look at the Scripture, look for the God of the Scripture. Could anything be more important than meeting God at Christmas? Could anything make Christmas more meaningful? As you spend time in prayer, ask God to make Himself known to you.

Third, help someone else know the significance of Christmas. The person who teaches is the person who learns. As you share the blessings of God’s sending His Son, you will help someone else and help yourself. It is always that way.

Finally, bow before Jesus and give yourself to Him in worship and obedience.

Have a blessed Christmas.

  1. Some things are meant to be done in private, others things are meant to be done in public in Honoring God in Christ Jesus. Context often determines what should be private or public. Don’t forget to give God the Glory for acts of Mercy privately but if you are out where others do not know you or if you are a public figure: give the Glory publicly to God. A Christian should acknowledge the Character/Presence of Christ in the Act. We should not engage in a public debate with source of the good acts of others for we Know there is no Good apart from God. May the debate of God’s Presence in His People be won realizing His Plan. Romans 12: 4-6, etc.

    Blessings.
