Becoming A Man

I was very fortunate to grow up in church. My home church blessed me with affirmation, encouragement, sound doctrine, and a love for the Scripture. My parents taught me to love God and to love the church.

Many things stand out in my mind about going to church. One was that we wore our best clothes.

But, another thing stands out in my mind. My mother often dressed me in short pants, suspenders, a coat, and a bow-tie. This was in a day when men did not wear shorts to church.

To this day, I hate that outfit.

It made me look like a child (that’s what I was), and I wanted to be a man. Even though bow-ties are “in” and many men wear shorts to church, I still rebel against both.

That is the background for Paul’s analogy of the law being our guardian or schoolmaster. Well to do Roman families had a slave who was given responsibility for the children. The children, of course, could not wait to be out from under the guardian.

Paul told the Galatians that going back to legalism would be like a young man of majority age going back to childhood.

In Christ, God has set us free and given us the status of God’s Sons. We are free in Him.

Why would we ever go back to the guardian?

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1).
