What Is This Day About?

What do we do with Sunday? Sometimes it gives us a dilemma. We know we no longer live by law. Now we live by grace. We know the Sabbath was made for us and not us for the Sabbath.

How should we take today? What should our Sunday be like?

Here are my suggestions for today.

First, today is a day to rest, refresh, and renew. Even for someone like me who puts in so much effort as I preach Saturday night and Sunday, Sunday is a call to rethink my life. It helps me to remember my priorities.

It should be a time to retool our energy and our emotions. It is a time to do differently.

Second, today is a day of worship. Whatever else we make Sunday, it must be a time to worship. But it must not be the only time to worship. Our worship on the Lord’s Day should help us worship everyday.

Third, today is a day to care for others. Since most of us do not work at our “making a living” jobs on Sunday, we have the opportunity to consider the needs of other people. Shouldn’t this be a time to reach out to those “sick and in prison?” Jesus said “if you have done it to the least of these my brethren, you have done it to me.” Sunday should be a time when we reach out to the “least of these.”

Fourth, today is a day to get close to those who matter in our lives. Busy lives make for difficult relationships. As we spend this day, let us include those closest to us.

Finally, today is a day to honor God. May you and I honor Him this day and everyday.

How do you make the most of this day? Please leave us a short comment.

  1. I remember whose I am and ask: Here I am Lord, what must I do now?

Good message on asking Him to do the difficult things. However, for a debate of life to be entered, one must show up with support. Romans 12

    Blessings

  2. The sabbath is a day for me to clear my thoughts of all my weekly obligations and focus on family and enjoyment of life. By focusing on these things, I can’t help but reaffirm the glory of the One who created all things and made this life possible. By leaving behind the busy-ness that we often get entangled, I can remember for who’s glory I am living.
My idea of the perfect sabbath starts with family prayer and worship, followed by a day at the park, and ending with dinner and conversation with good friends.
