Quotations You Can Use (April 19, 2013)

“Much that we take for granted in a ‘civilized’ society is actually based upon the assumption of human sin. Nearly all legislation has grown up because we simply cannot be trusted to settle our disputes with justice and without self-interest. A promise is not enough; we need a contract. Doors are not enough; we have to lock and bolt them. The payment of fares is not enough; tickets have to be issued, inspected and collected. Law and order are not enough; we need the police to enforce them. All this is due to our sin. We cannot trust one another. We need protection against one another. It is a terrible indication of what human nature is really like”–John Stott, Basic Christianity, 65.

“The way to make it HARD for your KIDS is to make it too EASY for them”–Wayne Hilsden.

“When the church is absolutely different from the world, she invaribly attracts it”–D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones.

“. . . we must surrender the undisputed authority over our lives to the Spirit who lives within us.The more we make a habit of saying ‘no’ to the sinful nature and ‘yes’ to the Spirit, the more the ugly works of the flesh will disappear and the delightful fruit of the Spirit will take their place”–John Stott, Basic Christianity, 102.

  1. The frigid island nation of Iceland is, by all accounts, a peaceful place. In the entire history of the country, there has been only one armed robbery. Samantha Weaver, Strange but True

That number prompted me to wonder about the population:
1 January 2013 the population of Iceland was 321,857, compared with 319,575 1 January 2012

That prompted me to wonder about the religion of its people:
    Evangelical Lutheran 87.1%, other Protestant 4.1%, Roman Catholic 1.7%, other 7.1% (2002)

So I wondered about the 64.85 degree latitude and what area corresponded to it in population. This latitude is found in Canada, scandinavia and Russia, ah.. Alaska.

Nome, Alaska detailed profile. … Population in 2011: 3,629. ….. state lists there were 25 registered sex offenders living in Nome, Alaska as of April 15, 2013. … City-data.com crime index = 333.7 (higher means more crime, US average = 266.4).

    Interesting.

    Blessings.
