What Are You Doing “Daily?”

How do you become really good at something? Is it possible for you or me to become an expert?

Several years ago I taught at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Our president was Dr. Landrum Leavell, a great leader and a man who loved the seminary. He often talked about our becoming experts. He wanted an outstanding faculty, and he reminded us often about how that could happen.

In faculty meetings he reminded us that anyone can become an expert by applying yourself and deliberately working to become an expert. In biblical studies, of course, you wouldn’t become an expert on the Bible but you could become on one particular book.

How would that happen? You would begin a daily discipline in the area or discipline of your choice. By daily study, you could become an expert.

The emphasis is on daily. Something like this does not occur with a flurry of activity. It happens because you spend the time to grow and understand.

When Jesus gave the Parable of the Talents, He told about a man who gave responsibility and went away for a long time. The owner fully expected the servants to take that long time to manage the owner’s affairs.

When I was a young pastor, we often talked about “burning out” or “rusting out,” as if one was better than the other.  What God wants is for us to give ourselves to Him daily. He expects us to take up our cross daily. As we do so, we can become more of what God wants us to be.

What you do daily will define your life.

Without being redundant, the following are areas I see believers need to work on daily.

First, spend time with God daily. Scripture and prayer are essentials for becoming like Christ. Set up a plan to daily spend time with God. Most any plan will work. Working the plan is the essential element.

Second, spend time with your family daily. As you spend time together, talk about your hopes and dreams. Look for ways you can help to make your spouse or parents’ lives better.

Third, look for daily ways to live out “Christ in you.” As you travel through life, you will find constant opportunities to live out your faith.

Be positive. Be kind. Be caring.

Do these things daily and you will begin to see positive outcomes for your life.

  1. Redundancy, is a necessity at times.

I remember the old saying about a preacher who after being “Called” preached a great sermon. He received the greatest of responses. Everyone was so excited. The next week he preached the same sermon. And the next week after that, and so on. Finally, with attendance and giving down the deacons had a meeting with him saying, “ You have a great sermon, but when are you going to preach another sermon? We are tired of that one!” The preacher stood up and slowly looked around the room. He said, “Evidently you are missing the point of the Sermon.” With deacons looking bewildered he continued, “I clearly stated, the Precepts of the Lord are Built. It would be pointless to preach my next sermon until you have understood this one.”

Getting too much of a good thing is not applicable to God in Christ Jesus, in my humble opinion.

    Preach on Brother!

    Blessings

  2. Thanks, Waylon, for your reassuring words. By trying to do these 3 things daily, I find that God is working all around me. He gives numerous opportunities to make a difference, for which to be so thankful. If ever to become an “expert” at loving and serving, how awesome that would glorify God!
