What Do You Do When You Don’t Know What To Do?

Yesterday I preached from 2 Chronicles 20 and the story of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah.

Jehoshaphat told God he didn’t know what to do but that their eyes were on God.

The king had every reason to tremble. He faced a coalition of three kings from across the Jordan River. Once these armies crossed the Jordan into the territory of Judah, they had a short 30 mile march to Jerusalem.

Jehoshaphat did what he should have done. He cried out to God for deliverance. He ended his prayer with these words: “O our God, will you not judge them [our enemies]? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you” (2 Chronicles 20:12).

What do you do when you don’t know what to do?

You call upon God, listen to His word, and obey the Lord.

God spoke by His Spirit to Jehaziel, a Levite. Jehaziel emphasized four things they should do.

First, he told the people not to be afraid or discouraged (2 Chronicles 20:15,17). Fear and faith cannot co-exist. To fear is to forsake God. To put faith in God is overcome fear.

Second, he assured them God would be with them (2 Chronicles 20:17). They would not go into battle alone, and they would not be fighting the battle.

Third, God told them the battle was His battle not theirs (2 Chronicles 20:15,17). I cannot think of anything more wonderful than knowing God will take my battles and will fight them for me. I must simply have faith. Jehoshaphat told the people to “Have faith in the Lord your God and you will be upheld” (2 Chronicles 20:20). He then sent the Levites (priests and musicians) to lead the army into battle. They sang and worshiped, and God gave the victory.

Finally, God told them about “tomorrow.” God would act as they did what He commanded. Like Joshua taking Jericho, the people had to wait on God and follow Him.

Life is hard. We face terrible battles which strike fear in our hearts.

When we depend on God, He goes before us to fight our battles and give us the victory.

  1. Did you notice God Spoke for the good of all the people and used various gifts and talents to fulfill His Plan? Did you notice the paradigm of Romans 12:5 being employed for God’s Glory?
Perhaps what one needs to do is find God’s People, even if one has to go to Nineveh.

    Interesting today…very.

    Blessings
