How We Know Fathers Really Matter

We live in a culture where fathers are increasingly considered to be irrelevant, as if they are not needed or wanted.

This is, of course, an erroneousness point of view and one which is destructive to a stable society.

How do we know fathers really matter?

First, the studies show how much fathers matter. Interestingly, scientific studies show the significance of men in society. These studies show fathers to be of supreme importance for children. Not only to do children do better in a home with a mom and a dad, but they also do better when the mom and dad are married.

These studies show the significance of what natural law supports. Marriage is important and the family as we have known it is important.

Second, the Scripture demonstrates the importance of fathers.

From the very beginning, God has shown the significance of marriage: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 1:31).

The commandment to honor father and mother indicates the importance of both parents. This commandment “with a promise” (Ephesians 6:2-3) shows the significance of honoring parents–“that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). Moses emphasized the importance to society (it will endure) while Paul (Ephesians 6:3) emphasized the importance to the individual (long life).

Fathers following God and His way bless society and the individual.

Most importantly, we know the value of fathers because God chose for His Son to be born of woman and to be raised by a father.  God could have chosen any way to reveal His Son. He chose to do so through what we term a “traditional family.” God chose a father to raise His Son.

What an amazing father Joseph was! He heard God, and he spoke to God. What he heard he obeyed. His sensitivity to God provided protection for the infant. God showed the value of fathers by choosing one for this special task.

May we honor father and mother and may we be obedient to God and His ways.
