Getting Ready For The Fourth Of July

“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, Ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other”–John Adams, 1798.

“The very fact Jesus told us not to be ashamed of him shows that he knew we would be tempted to be ashamed; and the fact that he added ‘in this adulterous and sinful generation’ shows that he knew why. He clearly anticipated that his church would be a minority movement in the world; and it requires courage to side with the few against the many, especially if the few are unpopular and we may not be naturally drawn to them”–John Stott, Basic Christianity, 116.

“And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need His assistance. I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth–that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings that ‘except the Lord build they labor in vain that build it.’ I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel”–eighty-one year old Ben Franklin speaking at the 1787 Constitutional Convention.

  1. So, how is it you picked some of my favorite quotes? 😉

This is a good time to remind your readers to pay attention the two dollar bill. As I pay or tip with two dollar bills it gives me a chance to remind myself as well as the receiver why we have the “privilege” to live we the freedoms we currently enjoy and that lives have been offered/given through the generations since the signing of the Deceleration of Independence for those freedoms to continue.

A Tapestry of the signing hangs in the Jefferson Parish Museum next to Fred C. Matthew’s uniform worn in WW 2 and a flag that flew over Washing D.C.

This celebrated date is also for me an example of the personification of Romans 12:5.

Lest we forget the authors of the quotes you cite and Benjamin Franklin’s plea/address to the Continental Congress, that resulted in prayer for God’s guidance in our government as well as a Chaplin position.

    Blessings
