Determine What Matters To God

Open any good book about time management and you will learn to list and live by your priorities.

While this sounds good and seems to make sense, there’s a better idea. Instead of determining your priorities, determine to find and follow God’s priorities.

Any gangster or racketeer can make a “to-do” list or set priorities. The question of eternity is not what my priorities are but what God’s priorities are for me. After all, what does it profit a person to gain the whole world and lose his soul?

As I read God’s Word and listen to God’s Spirit, I can set priorities which will matter for all eternity.

Recently, I wrote about making the most of everyday by starting the day with God. You can read about that by clicking here:

Make The Most Of Everyday By Starting Your Day With God

As you spend time with God, ask Him what matters. Tell God you are ready to hear from Him and follow His priorities. As you draw near to God, He will draw near to you. As you listen to Him and follow His priorities, you will begin making sense of life. Following God’s plan brings fulfillment and meaning to life.

Determining God’s priorities will mean I put relationships where they belong and make the main things the main things. As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said: ” Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least.”

I have three practical suggestions for making the most of everyday.

First, determine the priorities only you can do. As a pastor, I have only a few things I do but they are the things God has set before me. Each of us must learn what we can provide to an organization, church, business, or family. We must make sure we carry out our responsibilities.

Second, once you’ve determined God’s priority and what only you can do, do it with all your heart. Make the main thing the main thing. Don’t let anything else get in the way.

Finally, don’t succumb to the “Tyranny of the Urgent.” Most important things aren’t urgent and most urgent things aren’t important. For example, giving your family the time they need is usually not urgent but it is important. As you contemplate those things which are important or urgent, you will get a better handle on what really matters.

Make the most of this day by determining and doing what matters to God.
