The Person Who Serves God

“Over the years, I’ve participated in many ordination examinations, and I’ve looked for four characteristics in each candidate: a personal experience of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ; a sense of calling from the Lord; a love for and knowledge of the Word of God; and a high respect for the work of the ministry. Whenever we’ve examined a candidate who was flippant about ministry, who saw it as a job and not a divine calling, he didn’t get my vote. Whether as a pastor, missionary, teacher, choir member, or usher, being a servant of God is a serious thing, and it deserves the very best that we can give”–Warren Wiersbe, Be Amazed: Restoring an Attitude of Wonder and Worship, 182.

[The man of God can be characterized in this way:] “True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin” (Malachi 2:6).

“Godly leaders give good instruction, provide a Godly example, walk with God, and, therefore, bless God’s people”–Waylon Bailey.

“For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, and from his mouth men should seek instruction–because he is the messenger fo the Lord Almighty” (Malachi 2:7).

“. . . here is a principle of far-reaching importance for ministers, missionaries and other Christian workers. It is that, in seeking to win other people for Christ, our end is to make them like us, while the means to that end is to make ourselves like them. If they are to become one with us in Christian conviction and experience, we must first become one with them in Christian compassion. We must be able to say with the apostle Paul: ‘I became like you; now you become like me’ [Galatians 4:12]”–John R.W. Stott, The Message of Galatians, 113.

  2. This is good stuff, thank you for sharing, I decided several years ago that Unless the candidates came out of a network I know and trust I could not truthfully be apart of ordination. To many hirelings looking after the Sheppherd’s flock.
